Story of a white pawn (in love) with a black queen

1-10 September 2023, Marostica

语 指南

The "Story of a white pawn (in love) with a black queen" lives again in Marostica thanks to the invisible encounter between the poet Luciano Caruso (1944-2002) and the artist Ugo Locatelli (1940), refined protagonists of Italian culture.

On the occasion of the centenary of the chess game with living characters (1923-2023), the Bonotto Foundation and the Luciano Caruso Archive, in collaboration with Argot Produzioni and with the support of Regione Veneto, the City of Marostica and the Banca Popolare di Marostica Volksbank Foundation, sign from 1 to September 10, 2023 an unprecedented artistic project intended to invade city spaces and bring to the attention of the community issues such as otherness, gender and race difference, mimetic desire and massifying identification, self-heteroperception.

The project, curated by Ugo Locatelli, Maurizio Panici, Patrizio Peterlini and Sonia Puccetti Caruso, includes a theatrical performance with sound and visual installation at the Chiesetta San Marco, a documentary exhibition dedicated to the work of Luciano Caruso and Ugo Locatelli at the Torre del Rivellino and a path of Street Art.

An idea for the city that also celebrates ten years of the Bonotto Foundation, created to enhance the Bonotto Collection dedicated to the Fluxus movement and Concrete, Visual and Sound Poetry, and of the Luciano Caruso Archive Association, which aims to raise awareness of the figure of the intellectual and the artist.

The founding element of the event is the reactivation of a historic poetic action, born from a text by Luciano Caruso, subsequently combined with a visual text by Ugo Locatelli, presented to the public in theatrical form only on two occasions, in 1968 in Naples by the Company by Mario and Maria Luisa Santella and in 1978 in Florence by the same author, with sets by Gianpaolo Di Cocco. Made between 1967 and 1968 by Luciano Caruso, the text tells the story of an impossible love between a white pawn and a black queen. The poem/action, set in a fantasy world, is a metaphor for everyday life expressed through the names and images taken from the game of chess. It is a four-handed work created by the close collaboration between the two artists, who have never met in person, but linked by a strong interest in themes such as the metaphor of the mirror man and the game of identity and ephemeral in which everything disappears.

In Marostica, in the collective imagination the city of chess, the show directed by Maurizio Panici will be staged at the Chiesetta San Marco on 1 September (at 8.30 pm) in national premiere which, starting from the historic collaboration between Luciano Caruso and Ugo Locatelli , offers an immersive journey strongly characterized by the use of digital processing of images and sounds that mark the story. Writing, image and sound merge to compose an emotional score that projects the viewer into a dreamlike universe.
The scenography-installation, with digital processing of Locatelli's images, soundtrack of the text and a sculpture by Arnaldo Pomodoro, will be visible until 10 September (opening hours 16.00-18.00, free admission).

The spaces of the Torre del Rivellino will host an exhibition dedicated to Luciano Caruso and Ugo Locatelli, with an attention to the collaboration between the two artists which began in 1968. The exhibition, which will develop over the three floors of the tower, will present archival documents and works from the Bonotto Collection and the Luciano Caruso Archive, two of the most important Italian archives concerning international experimental poetry: Concrete Poetry, Visual Poetry, Sound Poetry. The exhibition will also affect the external structure of the tower, transforming it into an impressive temporary installation. From 2 to 10 September 2023. Inauguration 1 September, 6.00 pm.

Finally, a Street Art itinerary, with site specific interventions, developed by Ugo Locatelli (the artist has been practicing street art interventions since 1965), will connect the main places affected by the event, from the Civic Library, venue of the exhibition, to the San Marco Church , seat of the show, up to the portico of Palazzo del Doglione, seat of the mobile installation of Locatelli.
