语 指南

Sense Sound / Sound Sense is an exhibition project dedicated to musical scores, records and their relationship with the music of the Fluxus movement, created from the collaboration between the Fondazione Bonotto and the Fondazione Musica per Roma.

The Sense Sound / Sound Sense project, curated by Patrizio Peterlini and Walter Rovere with the collaboration of Giorgio Maffei, will be on exhibition in Rome from 6 May to 2 July 2016, at the AuditoriumArte Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome.

The exhibition is intended to offer an initial consideration of scores and musical notation in relation to Fluxus and ZAJ. Fluxus has, over time, been recognized as one of the most influential artistic movements of the 20th century and the forerunner of entire artistic trends that followed (from conceptual to performance to video-art), but the movement was distinctive in that it assigned enormous importance to musical production.

Fluxus and ZAJ presented all its own public events as “concerts”, but concerts that systematically demolished all accepted notions of form and content in in music, aiming at the by now obsolete listening conventions and cultural values of classical music.

It is not by chance that the term Intermedia was coined to define the assault on separate categories of art, the unique fusions between poetry, conceptual art and sculpture and the elimination of the distance between “musical” and “theatrical” performance represented by many Fluxus “Events”.

The Fluxus scores followed an equally radical approach, breaking free from the need to “represent” sounds through special symbols, and dragging notation into the fields of graphics, poetry and the visual arts, until it took on the status of an autonomous and complete work of art, that could be perfectly superimposed on the purely “visual” artistic research of the time.

In 1969, John Cage, in collaboration with Fluxus artist Alison Knowles, published “Notations”, a comprehensive anthology of the innovations brought by international experimental music to the functions and methods of notation (consisting of a large collection of graphic scores by 269 composers from the Foundation for Contemporary Performance Art). This has been taken as the starting point for the project Sense Sound / Sound Sense.

The exhibition will have a strong interactive technological component, so that it will be possible to listen to each score or see a historic performance of it. Sound and conceptual sculptures, home-made instruments, posters and original documents, discs and artists' books on musical topics will also be included.
The exhibition also extends into the Foyer of the Sala Petrassi where the 7 large canvases of the installation by Gianni Emilio Simonetti, "Sette quartetti. L'oublie de Métamorphoses" (2009), will be displayed.

The entire exhibition will be set up based on material from the Luigi Bonotto Collection.

The inauguration on 6 May will include some performances, including "Natura Morta" (Still Life) by Walter Marchetti.

The exhibition will display works and scores by:
Eric Andersen, George Brecht, Sylvano Bussotti, John Cage, Giuseppe Chiari, Philip Corner, Esther Ferrer, Juan Hidalgo, Dick Higgins, Robert Filliou, Toshi Ichiyanagi, Joe Jones, Milan Knizak, Takehisa Kosugi, Shigeko Kubota, György Ligeti, George Maciunas, Jackson Mac Low, Walter Marchetti, Charlotte Moorman, Yoko Ono, Nam June Paik, Ben Patterson, Terry Riley, Mieko Shiomi, Takako Saito, Gianni-Emilio Simonetti, Ben Vautier, Yoshimasa Wada, La Monte Young and others.
